In response, a rather stylish hero has emerged from the optical ether: blue light glasses.
These clever little spectacles have been praised as the ultimate panacea for everything from eye fatigue to poor sleep. But amidst the glowing reviews and chic frame designs, a particularly enchanting myth has taken root. Many hopeful patients ask us: Do blue light glasses actually stop my child (or myself) from becoming more nearsighted?
Here at University Optometric Center, we have a profound appreciation for a beautiful pair of glasses, but we hold a deeper reverence for scientific truth. So, let us adjust our tortoise-shell frames, pour a cup of tea, and separate the optical alchemy from the facts.
To understand the myth, we must first understand the villain. Blue light is a high-energy, short-wavelength light emitted by the sun, LED lights, and, of course, the screens of our smartphones, tablets, and laptops.
When you don a pair of bespoke blue light glasses, you are indeed doing your eyes a marvelous favor. By filtering out this high-energy light, these lenses help reduce digital eye strain—that dreadful feeling of dry, tired, and gritty eyes after a long day of spreadsheets. Furthermore, because blue light suppresses melatonin (the magical hormone that summons the sandman), blocking it in the evening can protect your beauty sleep.
However, reducing fatigue and improving sleep, while utterly delightful, is not the same thing as altering the anatomical growth of the eye.
Myopia, or nearsightedness, occurs when the eyeball grows a millimeter or two too long from front to back (axial elongation). When this happens, light focuses in front of the retina rather than directly upon it, turning distant trees and road signs into a lovely, albeit unhelpful, impressionist blur.
So, what causes this mysterious elongation?
While genetics certainly lay the foundation, modern environmental factors pull the trigger. The true culprits behind the global myopia boom are twofold: a lack of natural outdoor sunlight and an excess of "near work" (staring intensely at things mere inches from our noses). It is the prolonged, continuous focusing effort at close range—not the specific blue wavelength of the light itself—that signals the eye to grow longer.
Therefore, simply placing a blue light filter between a pair of eyes and a tablet will not stop the myopia train from leaving the station.

Orthokeratology (Ortho-K): Imagine wearing custom-crafted contact lenses while you dream, which gently reshape your cornea overnight.
