Finals week — that sacred season of caffeine, chaos, and cramming. Between late-night study sessions and digital textbooks, your eyes might be working overtime. While your brain devours data, your eyes silently beg for mercy. The good news? You can help them out in just a few minutes a day.
At University Optometric Center, we believe your vision deserves as much prep as your next exam. After all, concentration and clear sight go hand in hand.
When you stare at a screen for hours, your blink rate drops by nearly half. This leads to dryness, strain, and even tension headaches — none of which help you memorize that 50-slide PowerPoint. Tiny breaks and micro-movements can reset your focus, increase blood flow, and sharpen your visual performance.
Here are a few simple exercises to refresh those tired eyes:
Every 10 minutes, take 10 slow blinks while gazing about 10 feet away. This gentle routine encourages natural blinking, reduces dryness, and gives your focusing muscles a brief vacation. Think of it as a “stretch break” for your eyes — simple, quick, and surprisingly effective.
Imagine tracing a giant sideways “8” with your eyes, slowly and smoothly. Reverse direction after 30 seconds. This little dance helps enhance eye coordination and visual tracking — useful for both note-taking and Netflix breaks.
Rub your palms together to warm them, then gently cup them over your closed eyes (no pressure, please). The darkness and warmth calm your optic nerves, soothing fatigue almost instantly.
Hold your thumb about 10 inches from your face and focus on it for five seconds. Then shift your gaze to something far away for another five. Repeat 10 times to train your eyes’ focusing agility.
Blink often — yes, consciously!
Adjust your screen brightness to match your surroundings.
Keep hydrated; your eyes love moisture too.
Schedule your comprehensive eye exam before finals season hits again.
Your eyes are unsung heroes of academic success. Treat them kindly, and they’ll reward you with clarity, comfort, and sharper focus — one exam (and espresso) at a time.
